Summer is on the horizon! We are counting down the days until we can recharge under the sun in our own backyard or on our favorite summer vacation. But, for now, we are left trekking through late-spring burn-out. Sources of this strange feeling vary as sources of energy vary. One integral source of energy in our bodies is the nutrient Coenzyme Q10.
What is CoQ10 (and what does it have to do with energy production)?
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) aids energy maintenance in the body, working as a cofactor in the electron transport chain. The coenzyme functions both as an energy-assisting enzyme and supports cells by helping protect them from free radicals. CoQ10 is endogenous—our bodies naturally produce it from within. Concentration of CoQ10 differs from cell to cell, organ to organ. Though concentration differs, the enzyme exists to some degree in every cell. CoQ10 is highest in organs with high metabolisms—kidneys, heart, liver.
Bottom line is, the energy production of CoQ10 is essential in organ and tissue health!
What Are Natural Sources of CoQ10?
Given the endogenous nature of the enzyme, our bodies naturally produce CoQ10 from within, but we can still seek it out in our diets. CoQ10 is found in the following foods:
- Whole Grains
- Oily Fish (salmon and tuna)
- Organ Meats (liver)
People tend to get enough CoQ10 through balanced diets, but CoQ10 supplements are available for those struggling with deficiencies. Supplements are available in different forms: oral sprays, soft gel capsules, and tablets.
Can CoQ10 Aid Energy Production?
Maintaining adequate CoQ10 levels is essential, stoking your cells with adequate energy! Given that the enzyme is fat-soluble, it is often recommended that you take the supplement in conjunction with a meal.
Can I Take Too Much CoQ10?
CoQ10 is typically well-tolerated at high doses, BUT, consuming excess amounts is not recommended. CoQ10 is a fat-soluble coenzyme. It cannot be flushed out of the body as easily as water-soluble supplements. Because of this, extreme excesses can cause negative effects.
Does Supplement Brand/Source Matter?
When supplementing CoQ10—YES—supplement source matters. CoQ10 supplements that utilize liposomal delivery systems are optimal. Liposomal delivery allows the CoQ10 to be delivered in a protective liposome. The delivery mechanisms ensure delivery to optimal locations in the body, increasing nutrient absorption!
As always, for your individual health needs, we recommend talking with your healthcare provider if you have concerns about individual deficiencies, dosage or efficacy.
